Internationally-renowned artist Cas Holmes has given a workshop to our Y10 and Y12 Textiles students, exploring paper, cloth and stitch.

Cas’ work is best described as ‘painting with cloth’ and she uses layers of paint, dye, stitch and found materials to build a story. She showed our students the techniques she uses when creating her pieces and imbued them with a blast of her own creative confidence.

Inviting members of the group to choose a sketch from her gorgeous workbook as her starting point, she reasoned “only when you absolve yourself from the decision-making and go with what’s in front of you do you start to explore.”

She had students crumpling paper from magazines to a softness for them to use in their sample. When stitching she urged them to “remove yourselves from the tyranny of the edges, stitch from the back so you don’t know where the edges are.”

In the Q&A afterwards students enjoyed hearing that she went to art college despite not getting a high grade in her A Level Art – an excellent teacher encouraged her to follow her path.
