We had lots of fun and learned lots about the unseen world of bacteria at our “Marvellous Microbes” science-themed afternoon at the Senior School this week.
Forty children from four different primary schools shared their research on display boards around the Hall. Pupils and teachers from St Christopher’s the Hall, St John’s CE Primary School, Somerhill and our own Junior School were proud to show off all their hard work.
While the judging panel considered the entries, the children enjoyed lessons given by our Head of Science and Head of Biology in two of our Science Labs, using contact tracing to try to find the source of an infection! Many thanks to Dr Doyle and Miss Cheney for leading these lessons and to our Sixth Form Science Captains for helping out.
Headmistress Ms Chamberlain, Governor Dr Nigel Jepps and our Head Girl Emily (who is studying sciences) had the difficult task of deciding on the winners:
1st | St John’s Primary, Group 2 | “Why is it important to wash our hands?” |
2nd | St Christopher’s the Hall, Group 1 | “How do different surfaces affect the growth of bacteria?” |
Teacher prize for enthusiasm! | Mr Chowdhury, St Christopher’s the Hall |
At the end we switched on a UV light to show how far – despite everyone having washed their hands – some hidden “bacteria” had spread onto ourselves! It was a fantastic afternoon, many thanks to everyone involved.
