Our students who spoke at the Model United Nations over the weekend came away with multiple awards for their performances arguing the standpoint of their given country.
Nine Year 12s and one Year 11 attended the London YouthMUN at the LSE with hundreds of other Sixth Form students. The aim of the event is to “promote a deeper understanding of international relations and diplomacy” and in the Opening Ceremony everybody was urged to be fearless, test personal limits and seize the chance to try something new.
Bella’s role was to defend the Latvian government in an asylum case at the European Court of Human Rights – for which she won Best Advocate. This was in the advanced-level committee, despite this being Bella’s first experience at MUN.
Isobel also won Best Delegate for her representation of Vietnam, working on delivering health care to South East Asia in the Committee of UN Women. Isobel and Bella’s awards were the highest accolades available to them.
Poppy and Lucie won Most Improved Delegates, for representing Turkey in the Historical NATO Committee, dealing with the Turkey / Cyprus conflict of 1974. The Committee Chairs noted their diplomacy, quick-thinking and considered responses.
Head of History and Politics, Ms Windle, who accompanied the team praised the students’ hard work, resilience and enthusiasm: “They carried other delegates with them and used diplomacy to build coalitions and solve problems in the world!”
