Our new Medical Society heard direct from Sheffield University staff and students this week about what they need to do to be offered a place to study medicine or dentistry.
The club is open to Years 9-13 and has been set up by our new Head of Chemistry and Head of Science, Dr Emma Doyle.
Dr Doyle said: “We need people in the NHS and healthcare more than ever now. I want students to realise it is accessible and that you don’t have to be just a GP or a surgeon, there is a whole range of healthcare roles out there.”
The School’s Medical Prefect, Dot is leading the club, helped by eight other founder members in Year 12.
Together with Dr Doyle they will arrange speakers and activities. After half term a midwife and a psychiatrist, both parents at the School, are coming in to give a talk and there will be an A&E role play where students will act symptoms for other club members to identify and diagnose.
Practice sessions will be held for UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) and BMAT (BioMedical Admissions Test), used by UK Universities to screen prospective students for their medical, dental, biomedical and veterinary degree courses.
The Medical Society would be delighted to hear from any other parents or family members working in healthcare who could come in to share their experiences with students.
