Eyes and souls were lifted by the beautiful music and surroundings of Monday’s Carol Service at Tonbridge School Chapel.
Nine Lessons telling the biblical Christmas story were read by a student from each year group and a member of staff, concluding with the opening verses of the Gospel of John, read by The Reverend Lionel Kevis.
The programme of glorious Christmas music opened with the processional carol Once in royal David’s city. The Senior Choir and the Senior Chamber choir performed various much-loved and lesser known pieces including: The Lord at first did Adam make, In dulci jubilo, Sussex Carol and an arrangement of Star in the East by Miss Leather who conducted this piece.
Numbers were restricted to enable social distancing, but Year 7 parents were present to hear their daughters perform Silent Night in the Year 7 Choir. Parents from Year 8 – who missed out last year as the Service was cancelled – were there, along with parents from outgoing Year 13.
The service ended with everyone joining in with Hark! the herald angels sing, before the congregation headed out with warm hearts into the cold, damp night.
