Calling all F1 fans and anyone who would like to help us build an electric car! The Wally Greenpower Club is raising money to buy a car kit that students can build and then race on some fantastic local tracks such as Goodwood.
We are aiming to raise at least £6,000 in total, to enable us to buy the basic kit (which is over £3,000) and associated motors, batteries, tools, helmets, teamwear and tyres we will need. Sponsors will get their name or logo on the car; the bigger your donation, the bigger your name! We will also @mention or hashtag you on our social media. Please visit our GoFundMe page for details.
We are doing this through the Greenpower Education Trust, a UK-based charity which aims to “unlock potential and spark enthusiasm for STEM through the excitement of motorsport”.
Wally Greenpower started meeting in January this year, and since then, Year 10 students in Greenpower Club have been building a 1:10 scale remote-controlled electric race car of their own (pictured). They have been learning skills such as battery management, how to repair the car, as well as how differentials and suspensions work.
Year 12 have been focusing on the fundraising and sponsorship side. They have designed the logo, identified and costed team kit, prepared livery ideas for the car and organised a movie night for Years 7 and 8, which raised £138.
Head of Physics Mr Hill leads the Greenpower Club. He says “the sooner we get the funding, the sooner we can get started properly. There’s been so much enthusiasm already; we get to create something and then improve it. It’s all about the efficiency of the electric car, it’s not about being ‘the fastest’. We will have to drive the car as far as we can for 90 minutes. Please help us get this off the ground.”
