It’s full throttle in the Classics Department for a week devoted to the stories, myths, gods and goddesses of the ancient world and their continuing presence in our lives.

Bestselling children’s author Caroline Lawrence, best-known for her Roman Mysteries series, visited Wally to speak to Years 5, 7 and 8 about the “hero’s journey” narrative arc used in many ancient tales and in her own work. She spelt out the seven steps a hero frequently undertakes on an adventure, including challenge, battle, victory and ultimately greater knowledge or self-transformation.

Library staff have created a fabulous display of Greek mythology and are promoting modern literature featuring ancient classical characters and stories. Younger years in the Senior School have enjoyed making flying Pegasus models and cooking honey cakes – as enjoyed by Odysseus on his way home from the Trojan War.  Year 8 will enjoy watching a performance of Hadestown in the West End on Thursday this week and we are showing the film Hercules on Friday.
