Queen of Leenane gallery

Irish family drama comes to the Ship Theatre on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons this week, when Year 13 Drama students perform The Beauty Queen of Leenane, by Martin McDonagh. This award-winning play had successful runs in the West End and on and off Broadway after its premiere in Ireland in 1996.

The examined performance on Thursday will account for 20% of students’ A Level grade. Family, friends and students are very welcome to watch, curtain up at 4.30pm.

As ever, the Drama department have gone above and beyond to ensure an intense theatrical experience. The set, complete with grimy butler sink, stained net curtains and grubby walls, conveys the claustrophobia of lives that have stayed unchanged for years.

Head of Drama Mrs Bower-Morris explained “It’s all from from the prop store, but if it fits the play and will get the actors immersed into their piece and make them do better, why wouldn’t you do these things? The blocking also is really important, it takes a director’s eye see how to move actors around the stage. It’s about going for the professional standard.”
