It is with great sadness we hear that Old Girl Ruth Gates has died, at the age of 56.

Ruth left Walthamstow Hall in 1980 (where she excelled at lacrosse, among many other things) and went on to become one of the world’s foremost coral scientists.

We featured an interview with Ruth from New Scientist magazine in our most recent Old Girls’ Association news sheet, in which she talked about her work breeding corals tough enough to survive climate change.

As the obituary in The Atlantic magazine explains, Ruth embodied the worlds she studied – a reef in human form – enriching her surroundings by providing support to many.
