Reception
In Reception my daughter comes home buzzing about what she has learnt each day. She is encouraged to be brave and adventurous during the day and by taking part in CyleMeTots, Forest School and so much active play. I feel really connected with her school experience through the ‘open classroom’ sessions, constant feedback and because of the warm, friendly community of the School.’
Curriculum
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the statutory curriculum guidance for all children from birth to age five. In Reception, this is delivered through our imaginative Creative Curriculum. Our activities are multi-sensory and fun so that children are kept engaged and enthused. They reflect each child’s stage of development and unique learning journey. We offer a huge range of opportunities led by specialist teachers to enhance learning and introduce children to various subjects through play and exploration. These include Read Write Inc. Phonics, Power Maths, French, Music, PE, Forest School, Ballet, Cycling, Library, Leaps & Bounds and Tae Kwon Do. Pupils use our interactive whiteboards to enhance all areas of learning. Reception pupils also enjoy weekly, year round swimming lessons from the School’s own qualified swimming instructors at Walthamstow Hall’s Senior School Pool.
Partnership with Parents
Reception parents are invited to termly consultation evenings with teachers to discuss their child’s progress and development. A detailed written report is provided by the Reception Teacher in the Autumn and Summer Terms.
Parent Workshop events throughout the year offer advice on supporting the learning of Read, Write Inc Phonics and Maths.
Clubs
An exciting after School club timetable is introduced in the Spring Term, once the children are settled. These include Tae Kwon Do, Gymnastics and Lego. After School clubs for Reception pupils end at 4.00pm
Trips and Workshops
At Walthamstow Hall our aim is to provide as many rich experiences as possible so that pupils can see for themselves the wonder of the world around them. Reception children attend at least three external trips per year to enhance the broad curriculum on offer. Previous trips have included workshops at the Chiddingstone Literary Festival, Clip ‘n Climb, The British Wildlife Centre and Lullingstone Castle.
Uniform
The Reception uniform reflects the transition away from Nursery and Pre-School and into full-time school education:
Pinafore, navy tights, school white blouse, school cardigan, school coat, wellington boots.
PE kit: Walthamstow Hall white polo shirt, Walthamstow Hall red hoodies, black leggings in winter, black cycling shorts in summer, trainers, white socks, wellington boots.
Reception pupils also have a school Swimming kit and Ballet kit.
Food
Children in Early Years have healthy snacks in the morning and afternoon.
Our nutritionally balanced snacks and menus are prepared on-site and our Early Years children eat in our dedicated dining room. The warm and friendly kitchen staff know all children by name and serve them individually and during mealtimes. Children learn good table manners and how to make good food choices for a healthy body and mind. A cooked breakfast and tea is available for those staying at school for a longer day.
Wraparound Care and Holiday Club
The school day for Reception children ends at 3:15pm. Parents can either collect at that time or choose a seamless transition into Wraparound Care until 6:15pm.
Our Holiday Club provides flexible provision from 8:00am – 6:15pm Monday – Friday throughout the holidays except for Christmas week.
