Library
The Library is a versatile space where students come to read and study, which endeavours to be the heart of the school. A welcoming and inclusive environment to find reading recommendations, clubs, help with studies, and information on issues and topics covered in PSHE and Prayers.
Mrs Hickman and Mrs Allan are the School Librarians, and can be reached in the Library or by emailing library@whall.school

Books Clubs
All Booked Up runs for Years 7 & 8 and are led by our Sixth Form Library Captains.
Library Captains
We have Library Captains from Sixth Form. They help the Librarians with day-to-day tasks and events and lead our Year 7 & 8 book clubs.
Student Librarians
Students can sign up to become Student Librarians as part of the Co-Cu offering of clubs. Students come to the library one lunchtime a week and help with shelving, book covering and displays. Student Librarians are encouraged to give book recommendations and reviews.
Duke of Edinburgh
The role of Student Librarian can be used for the volunteering part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Displays and events
The Library celebrates various awareness and celebration events, such as World Book Day and LGBTQ+ History Month, with displays, book collections and the Book of the Week throughout the year.
Book Awards
Students have the opportunity to shadow various children’s book awards, the main one being The Carnegie Medal for Writing. Students are invited to join the Wally Shadowing group in the summer, which involves reading, reviewing and rating the shortlisted books. The Wally winner is put forward as our vote for the Shadower’s Choice Award.
Support for Sixth Form Studies
The library supports the Sixth Form with researching and referencing for their EPQs and NEAs.
Year 6/7
Our new cohort of Year 7 students are all given a book from the library to read over the summer before they begin their Wally Senior School adventure. They have the opportunity to share their reviews and artwork in the form of a postcard which is displayed in the library in the Autumn term.
Resources
The Library houses an extensive range of books for our students. Lower Fiction is open to all, the Senior Fiction section is for Year 9 and above (unless parent/guardian permission is given for borrowing in year 7/8), and our non-fiction looks to support our curriculum. There is an information area where students can find books on all sorts of topics, including issues that affect teenagers and their families. Magazines are available to read in our comfy chairs and we have plenty of eBooks accessible online.
Subscriptions
We subscribe to several online services which students use for their studies including Hodder GCSE and A Level magazines, JStor, Complete Issues, and Financial Times. New Scientist magazine can be ordered via the library for individual students who would like their own copy.
Reading Lists
English reading lists are curated for all key stages and give students a great resource for finding new books to read. We also create lists for subject areas and celebration and awareness days, which can be found on Accessit.
Archives
As well as managing the Library the Librarians also look after the Archives. New items and records are continually being added to our database. For more information please contact archivist@whall.school.
